California\u2019s Ensemble Mik Nawooj<\/strong><\/a> (EMN) is heading for the Fringe with 15 of the finest young musicians from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) to present The Hip-Hop Orchestra Experience.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a show that seamlessly fuses hip-hop and classical, the Americans and Scots will offer up a compelling mix of music including works by Mozart, Bach and Beethoven deconstructed and reimagined with funky rhythms and rapid fire rhymes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This exciting concept is designed to push hard at the boundaries of both hip-hop and concert music creating something entirely new. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The line-up puts US rapper Young Reshaud<\/strong> and turf dancer Yung Phil<\/strong> on stage with a Conservatoire line-up that features full strings, woodwind, French horn and soprano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hip-Hop Orchestra Experience<\/em> is the creation of EMN co-founders the composer JooWan Kim and producer Christopher Nicholas.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its in-person presence in Edinburgh builds on the success of highly-rated digital Fringe performance, pre-recorded at San Fransisco\u2019s Asian Arts Museum, last year.<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Praise included \u201cOh, I like this! Very cool!\u201d from the BBC<\/em>, \u201cIf you\u2019re into hip-hop, classical music or both this is a must see,\u201d \u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605 Three Weeks in Edinburgh<\/em> (TWE) and \u201can unapologetic love letter to old-school hip-hop sampling and classical composition,\u201d \u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605 The Voice<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kim said: \u201cThe Hip-Hop Orchestra Experience is something of a type and scale that has never been done before \u2013 around 20 performers on stage with a fusion of hip-hop and classical \u2013 the end result has a vibrant energy, beauty and identity all of its own.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd wherever we go we want to work with musicians, and capture something of the spirit of that place \u2013 and collaborating with the Conservatoire allows us to do exactly that. It\u2019s an incredibly exciting partnership and one that we hope Fringe audiences will really enjoy.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The music for the show comes from the EMN album Death Become Life<\/em> which creates meta music using Kim\u2019s \u201cMethod Sampling\u201d approach which involves borrowing from unrelated rationales (methods) and reframing them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three of the compositions \u2014 The Fountainheads Suite<\/em> \u2014 deconstruct works by Mozart (Mozart on Joy<\/em>), Beethoven (Beethoven on Struggle<\/em><\/a>) and Bach (Bach on Transcendence<\/em>). The suite was created as a direct response to COVID-19 and its disproportionate effects on marginalised communities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland \u2013 which celebrates its 175th<\/sup> anniversary this year \u2013 is one of the world\u2019s most multi-disciplinary performing arts, research and learning environments, spanning classical and traditional music, drama, dance, production, film and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
