{"id":2728,"date":"2024-09-03T13:17:41","date_gmt":"2024-09-03T12:17:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cool-banzai.185-132-38-6.plesk.page\/?p=2728"},"modified":"2024-09-03T13:17:44","modified_gmt":"2024-09-03T12:17:44","slug":"immerse-festival-to-celebrate-nature-and-the-solways-super-saltmarshes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cool-banzai.185-132-38-6.plesk.page\/?p=2728","title":{"rendered":"ImMerse Festival\u00a0to Celebrate Nature and the Solway\u2019s Super Saltmarshes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New event has ambitions to grow into south of Scotland\u2019s main annual environmental festival<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Discover and help protect Southern Scotland\u2019s wonderful waterways, landscapes and wildlife<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Have fun at the festival and take part in lots of nature-based activities and citizen science research<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new ImMerse festival will be a fun-filled chance to discover and celebrate the&nbsp;amazing saltmarshes \u2013 and wider natural environment \u2013 across the south of Scotland focusing particularly on the Solway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking place on 22 September, from 10am, at Annan Harbour and in the surrounding merse (saltmarshes) and river, there will be lots to do and see including nature, wildlife, citizen science and arts and crafts activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors can join the Saltmarsh School to learn all about the wildlife and environment of the merse. They can take part in guided walks and talks, nature craft water quality testing, invertebrate investigations and saltmarsh science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will also be discussions and films.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jan Hogarth, from SCAMP (Solway Coastal and Marine Project) which is helping organise the event, said:<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>\u201cThe merse is a magical, dynamic place full of wildlife that\u2019s constantly reshaped by ebb and flow of the tides. It provides nature-based solutions to challenges including carbon sequestration, flooding and biodiversity loss.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cBut it\u2019s under threat due to climate change.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThis festival is a great way to celebrate the merse and also to put a focus on the amazing waterways, landscapes and wildlife of all southern Scotland.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIt\u2019s an event we\u2019d love to see grow and develop to become the region\u2019s main environmental festival.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe Solway contains a quarter of the UK\u2019s saltmarshes. ImMerse is a chance to discover more about the saltmarshes, that have done so much to shape the Solway coast, and about the river Annan and its harbour.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jan, who is also an environmental artist, will take an active part in the festival leading Saltmarsh Sketching event where she will help people capture the beauties of this remarkable watery landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event will be a chance to be part of World Rivers Day and Earthwatch Europe&#8217;s Great UK WaterBlitz &#8211; two major national and international initiatives highlighting the importance of, and threats to, our natural waterways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will be opportunities to help with water testing in the Annan and for sampling the merse to look at the numbers of invertebrates, which are the base of the food chain and critical to all life on the saltmarshes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jenna Cains, Community and Education Lead Officer of the D&amp;G Climate Hub,<\/strong>&nbsp;which is another of the organising groups, will lead the water testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said:&nbsp;<em>\u201c<\/em><em>The ImMerse&nbsp;festival is a unique event that focusses on the somewhat overlooked habitat of merse, which is a dynamic and intricate landscape that supports specialist species, protects our Solway coastline and locks away carbon \u2013 making it crucial for the future of our communities and our precious wildlife.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival\u2019s learning activities will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Saltmarsh Science<\/em>\u00a0with a freelance ranger and saltmarsh expert\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Up the Creek<\/em>, walks with Galloway Fisheries Trust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Wood etching\u00a0<\/em>with D&amp;G Woodlands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Moth ID<\/em>\u00a0with SWSEIC (South West Scotland Environmental Information Centre)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Birds on the Solway<\/em>\u00a0with RSPB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South of Scotland&#8217;s Golden Eagle Project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn about Wild Woods from Borders Forest Trust<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Get into Soil<\/em>\u00a0with Propagate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Woodcraft with Southern Upland Way ranger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival hub will be a marquee at the harbour where the festival is working in partnership with Annan Harbour Action Group, D and G Climate Hub and SCAMP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will also be a showing&nbsp;<em>In Nature<\/em>, a film created by young filmmakers from Annan and&nbsp;<em>Why Not Scotland?<\/em>&nbsp;an inspiring movie about nature restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival coincides with world Rivers Day, The Great UK Water blitz, the Global Goals and the Scottish Government\u2019s Climate week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The WaterBlitz asks people across the UK to go out and measure the water quality of their local rivers, streams and lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A spokesperson for Earth Watch Europe<\/strong>, who we are working closely with ImMERSE, said:&nbsp;<em>\u201cCitizen science can make a difference. The Great UK WaterBlitz needs your help to collect data on water quality across the UK. Our aim is to increase biodiversity, sequester carbon where possible and support our coastal and marine habitats to adapt to the effects of climate change. In addition, and essential for the project we will be helping our coastal communities to adapt and be more resilient to predicted sea level rise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is addressing five key habitats, maritime\/coastal woodland, sand dunes, salt marsh, sea grass meadows and oyster reefs. As part of the delivery of the project we will be able to help inform and develop the blue carbon private capital markets.&nbsp;&nbsp;In addition to this it will ensure that our coastal communities derive economic, wellbeing benefits from the work we do.
